You’ve rebuilt your grip twice, bought a driver with more forgiveness than a saint, and the ball still starts left and bends right. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: for a huge number of amateurs, the slice starts in the hips.
The chain reaction
When your lead hip can’t rotate internally, your pelvis can’t clear in the downswing. When the pelvis doesn’t clear, your upper body takes over — throwing the club outside the line. That out-to-in path is the slice factory, and no grip change closes a factory.
The 30-second self-test
Sit on a chair, knees together, feet flat. Keeping knees still, swing one foot outward like a windscreen wiper. Less than 30–35° of movement? Your hips are writing cheques your swing can’t cash.
What actually fixes it
Not swing thoughts — range of motion. Ninety-ninety transitions, deep squat holds and hip CARs, done consistently for a few weeks, give your pelvis room to clear. Then the path shallows almost on its own. Golfers are frequently shocked at how much technique was really just tightness.
